A respective fragment of the cylinder pipe and welded joint of the protective housing were subjected to LM-based macro- and microscopic metallographic examination. The investigation also involved tests of mechanical properties and impact energy, hardness measurements and analysis of chemical composition. It was determined that the primary reason for cracking was the overloading of the cylinder pipe with the pressure of working liquid inside the cylinder during operation. It was also ascertained that the welding of the protective housing was responsible for the creation of a heat affected zone (HAZ) in the 32HA steel; the HAZ contained a very hard and brittle martensitic structure consisting thus a structural notch and increasing the susceptibility of the steel to cracking in this area.   • 59 Studies on Energy Absorption and Dynamic Deformation of Backing Material for Ballistic Evaluation of Body Armour Debarati Bhattacharjee, Ajay Kumar, Ipsita Biswas ABSTRACT The measurement of back face signature (BFS) or Behind Armour Blunt Trauma (BABT) is a critical aspect of ballistic evaluation of body armour. BFS is the impact experienced by the armour wearing body, when subjected to a non-penetrating projectile. Mineral or polymeric clay is used to measure the BFS. In addition to stopping the projectile, the body armour can be used only when the BFS also falls within permissible limits. The extent of the BFS depends upon the behavior of the backing material in different loading conditions and prior history. This paper explains some of the studies carried out on the backing material used for ballistic evaluation in Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh. It has been observed that the backing material is highly non-linear viscoelastic in nature. The depth of deformation is also linearly proportional to the impact energy and temperature. The effect of time on the depth of deformation is gradual and does not influence the BFS values during a standard ballistic evaluation comprising of 6-8 shots. Abstract: Electrolytic boronizing of titanium in (Na2B4O7-20%M2CO3) (M=Li, Na, K) was investigated. The phase composition of the boride layer surface was determined by xray diffraction (XRD). The morphology of the cross-section of the boride was determined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the composition of bor-ide was measured by X-ray energy-dispersive spectros-copy (EDS). The results show that the boride layer is consisting of TiB2 and TiB. TiB2 is continuous dense phase and TiB is whiskers phase. The thickness of TiB2 becomes thicker with the order of Li2CO3, Na2CO3, and K2CO3 in the electrolyte. At the same time, TiB whiskers change gradually from short and thick to thin and long. Powered by

To overcome these negativities, many researchers exert effort for years. They have searched for many solutions such as the rotation of substrate, heating treatment during deposition or after deposition, the introduction of transition elements as an interlayer, gradient or multilayer or composite strengthening, and the optimization studies performed by changing deposition process types and/or process parameters such as working gas and bias voltage. At last point reached, it has been understood that the deposition technique and parameters used together a favorable design of TiB2 based film are very significant for producing a qualified TiB2 based film. Therefore the use of pulsed-dc technology and conveniently selected process parameters and favorable film design will be the best solution regarding the inhibition of brittleness and thus the provision of high adhesion.
